Mathis Altmann

Mathis Altmann

Born in Munich, Germany, in 1987, Mathis Altmann lives and works in Zurich and Berlin. His practice unfolds within the expansive landscape of sculpture, intricately interwoven with the nuances of new media, notably video technologies. Altmann's distinctive signature lies in the creation of intricate and densely layered assemblages and collages that serve as a canvas for his robust socio-critical consciousness. Renowned for his ability to craft scenarios rich in contrasts, Altmann merges consumer goods, everyday objects, waste, and building materials into thought-provoking compositions. These compositions not only engage the viewer aesthetically but also beckon them to delve into the underlying social critiques embedded within the artwork. One of Altmann's focal points is the exploration of his own generation, the millennials, whose
existence unfolds against the backdrop of an accelerated and globalized context. He navigates a terrain fraught with questions surrounding creative labor, urban everyday life, and the ongoing struggle for authenticity and resistance. Altmann's work serves as a reflective mirror, capturing the zeitgeist of his generation, unraveling the complexities of their experiences and identities in the face of a rapidly changing world.
